Four friends and a great week end.
Some are still surprised when I tell them that I still am friends with a few people from when I was in middle school. From the ages of 12 to 14, I went to a school here in Rome not too far from where I live now. Oddly enough we were a really close class. To this very day a small group of us from that class meet up and go out, every so often, once every month or so. Out of this group of friends, 5 or 6 of us are of course the closest. Even when I moved to the UK in '90 we still kept in touch and when I came back to Rome in '94 we all met up again.
During college there was a big gap of years when we really didn't see each other at all. I started dating this guy and spent almost 7 years with him, so that kind of kept me out of the picture for a long time.
Anyways, this week end four of us (G, C, S and I) went to the natural hot springs and to the beach.
Our adventure started off early saturday night. G and C came to pick me up and we went to meet our other friend, S. In two separate cars, two in each car, we set off for our first destination, Viterbo.
Viterbo is a small medievel town, about an hr away from Rome. It has a beautiful town centre and is very picturesque. We had dinner there and met up with some friends that S had met on his last holiday. We went to get coffee with them after dinner and spent part of our evening with them.
Afterwards, we set off for our second but main event of the evening, the hot springs! For those of you who have no idea, let me enlighten you. The area is very flourishing with vulcanic rock and sulfuric natural hot springs. You can go there day or night, any season of the year and find these natural pools of hot steamy water. It's like a natural hot tub right there, out in the open.
Something a little like this
The water is about 30-32° C (roughly 85-88° F).. give or take a few degrees, and is said to have lots of marvellous properties. It's supposed to be very good for the skin, for the sinuses etc. The many minerals in the water are very good for you. But mainly it's a place where people go to chill, hang out and relax. It's populated by lots of people my age, especially at night.
So we get there probably something past 1am and get changed in the cars.... nothing to worry about baby.... it was totally pitch black and I was in a car with S, my gay friend, who's last thing on his mind was to see my bits
We're about to take our first dip, when S says "look what I brought..." handing us this bottle of Cointreau. Now this
makes the evening even more interesting!!!
So while S is off making new friends in the other boy tub, the three of us left in the bigger pool are starting to feel the Cointreau buzz. We start a game of truth or dare, minus the daring... so all we're left with is questions about our sexual habits and experiences... Imagine the scene if you will: three honest, tipsy people in a steamy pool of water, in the pitch black night.
It was so amazing. Later the clouds started to lift and suddenly there was this bright clear deep black sky, with all the twinkling stars shining down on us and illuminating the sky. I don't think I've ever laughed so much in my life! I think there was even the odd person or two who were turned on by our tales of brutal honesty... very sex and the city style!
Afterwards, S comes back from the smaller pool, telling us he hooked up with some guy! I tell you, this guy is worse than honey... he'd get hit on even in solitary confinement!
At about 5 am, we decide it's time to hit the road back on home, to the beach house. Two by two, we each get in our cars and the friend I was in the car with (the gay one) decides to put on music to keep us awake for the ride home. I was having a hard time helping him keep his eyes on the road as my buzz was more of a "I'm fairly drunk" kind of feeling. So I propose he put in our soundtrack... this is sort of like our theme song... is just soooo us! So out comes Material Girl, blaring from the speakers! Me and him trying to sing it on the top of our lungs, not a pretty sight!
We decide to make a stop to grab some coffee and a cornetto
(italian-style croissant)... yummy yummy yummy... untill I feel my macchiato starting a fight with the custard in my cornetto and what is left of the cointreau in my body... Ok.. time to put my milk and doughnut down, I say, before I hurl it back up and onto the floor. So that cut my snacking short!
We get back in the car, with Madonna's Immaculate Collection keeping us awake.
We finally got to bed at 6:30 am... the sun was up and the birds were chirping. Shut up, my head is spinning!
12 noon, the next day. Unfortunately G. has to leave and get back to the books. He's got an exam soon to finish his tower control course. So after we say our goodbyes it's time to get ready for the beach. It's a gorgeous hot day and the water is crystal clear! Perfect! We head on down, towel in one hand, shades, and flip flops.
S. tells us that his new "friend" is going to meet us later, after lunch. How sweet.... (how the heck does he do it, I have no idea!)
C. and I enjoy the odd gossip, (She's telling me all about her new possibly-to-be boyfriend), while S. is chatting to some other friends who are also there at the beach.
Finally we get to meet E.... he's only 23!!!! He's cute though, and S is real excited! He fits in real well though.
Anyways, we spent the whole day on the beach. C. and I fell asleep on our sunbeds, while S. and E. went "for a walk". We wake up at 7:15pm and head back home. After we're all showered we pack our stuff and close up the house. We stop off at the peer for dinner and then it's time to go home.
This week end felt like a two week holiday! It was a much needed escape. I couldn't have had a better time! Well I could have, really. Only thing missing was of course Michael, but given the circumstances and knowing he wouldn't be there, everything else was perfect!
These are memories I'll always cherish!
